Waialae Country Club has hosted the Sony Open since 1965 when it was then called the "Hawaiian Open." It remains as one of the longest active tenured hosts of a PGA Tour event in history. Past winners of the event include PGA Tour Hall of Famers Lee Trevino ('68) and Jack Nicklaus ('74) as well as local legends Ted Makalena ('66) and David Ishii ('90). In 1995, a unique tradition began when the tournament granted a Sponsor's exemption to a top Hawaii Amateur. This is made possible by the Friends of Hawaii Charities and has created opportunity for local amateurs to test their game against the world's best players. Past recipients of this exemption include Guy Yamamoto and Parker McLachlin via a special Qualifier for the top 12 ranked Hawaii Amateurs. Players gain points from designated amateur tournaments on the HSGA schedule throughout the year, with automatic eligibility going to the reigning Hawaii State Amateur and Manoa Cup Champions.
